Innovation from ASU EPICS Gold

In our previuos posts and reports we have described the vision of providing sustainability through the My World My Garden Sister Walls, two identical food walls providing fruits and vegetables to the town of Cradock, Eastern Cape, South Africa and another located in Downtown Eastside, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. In addition and to add to the list, another food wall will be constructed in Bergnek, Limpopo, South Africa.

This is an update is specifically to share information with you about the system for acquiring clean water that has been developed by the Drops for Africa Team of the ASU EPICS Gold (Arizona State University) program to ensure the vitality of the plants, being a very important part of the project.

SafeSIPP (Sustainable Innovative Portable Purification), is developing the water system we have decided to utilize to retrieve and transport water for the My World In A Garden vertical food walls. SafeSIPP won $2000 in a previous competition which will be used for research and development of the purification system as well as the manufacturing of several prototypes.

Who makes up the SafeSipp TeamTM?

The group is made up of (from left to right in the picture on the right):

• Lindsay Fleming (Chief Executive Officer, background in Chemical Engineering),
• Jacob Arredondo (Chief Financial Officer, background Marketing & Finance),
• Taylor Barker (Chief Operating Officer, background Chemical Engineering & Pre-Law), and
• Jared Schoepf (Chief Technology Officer, background Chemical Engineering & Sustainability).

All who are part of ASU (Arizona State University) EPICS Gold program.

The Idea driving Drops for Africa PureRoll™

A low cost barrel comprised of 80% recycled material that simultaneously transports and purifies contaminated water. As the barrel rolls, the water being transported will undergo a filtration process to remove disease causing contaminants. By more than doubling the amount of water retrieved during each trip and improving the method of transportation, PureRoll will reduce travel time to and from the source by 75%. The purified water will be used for drinking, cooking, hygiene, and agriculture with remaining water being sold to surrounding communities and local businesses to stimulate the economy. PureRoll can be easily stored in homes to prevent theft as well as repaired by the owner with replaceable parts.

Perceived benefits* aside from bring clean water for the vertical foods walls:

1. A single trip with PureRoll = Drinking water for 20 people daily (Access)
2. A single trip with PureRoll = 4 day supply of water for agriculture and gardening of freshly grown produce (Nutrition)
3. A single trip with PureRoll = Over three hours of available time daily to be devoted to seeking higher education (Education) *Information taken *from SafeSIPP (Sustainable Innovative Portable Purification) report.

Another amazing feature of the PureRoll is that with the strength of your pinky, one is able to pull the barrel behind them and also through rough terrain, i.e., rocky surfaces. Meaning that almost anyone in the community will be able to use this solution.

Next Steps

We have now established this is how we will bring clean water to the food wall, the next step is establish the system with which to water the individual vertical food wall plants through some form of drip system. Some Twitter comedian observed that Tiger Woods apparently retained ownership of Sergio Garcia in his pre-nup with Elin. That's harsh, but this much remains clear: Even after his perceived struggles of the last few major-less seasons, Tiger is far more prepared for the big moment than Garcia.

Fourteen years after their memorable duel at the 1999 PGA Championship, their respective careers have taken wildly divergent paths. After yesterday's win at The Players Championship, Woods now has 78 career PGA Tour wins. Sergio has had his moments 鈥?eight Tour wins, 10 Euro wins, various Ryder Cup heroics 鈥?but did anyone really think that Sergio would survive the 17-18 gauntlet yesterday? The golf gods simple weren't going to allow it, especially after Garcia's Saturday whining about Tiger distracting him.

The amazing numbers from the weekend's festivities:

4聽With the win, Tiger Woods is only four wins behind all-time PGA Tour wins leader Sam Snead, who won his final Tour event at age 52. Tiger is 37. I think he has time to get there.

13聽Garcia required 13 shots to navigate the final two holes at TPC Sawgrass, following up his quad at 17 with a double-bogey 6 at 18, where he rinsed another ball.

12 The win was Woods' fourth of the 2013 season, marking the 12th season of his career with four wins or more. Think about that: For most players, four wins denotes a career-making year. Tiger's Yankees 2 Derek Jeter White 2010 All Star Jerseys had 12 of them.

53-4 Woods ran his career record to 53-4 when holding at least a share of the 54-hole lead. He's the Mariano Rivera of golfers; give him the lead, and it's Enter Sandman.

300 Woods won the 300th start of his career. He also won the 100th and 200th starts of his career. Tiger apparently likes round numbers.

26 Tiger has now won 26 percent of his career PGA Tour starts. More than a quarter of the time he's teed it up, he's won. For reference, after his 300th start, Jack Nicklaus had 54 wins, a winning percentage of .180.

+13 The day was not without drama, thanks largely to Woods' double bogey at 14. For his career, Woods is 13-over par on that hole.

10 TPC Sawgrass has historically not been terribly friendly to Tiger. This year marked the first time in 10 years that Woods completed four par-or-better rounds in one Players.

4 Woods has his fourth victory, and it's only May 13. It's the earliest in a season that Woods has ever earned his fourth win.

3.25 Yesterday, the infamous par-3 17th claimed its share of victims. Players navigated the 137-yard hole in an average of 3.25 strokes on Sunday, the highest of the week. On Thursday, the average was 3.08; on Friday, 2.97; and on Saturday, 3.03. Of course, Giants 55 Tim Lincecum Road Cool Base Grey 2010 All Star Jerseys Sergio's 7 at the hole skews the Sunday average slightly.

The Alaska Aces announced their season-ending roster today -- the ECHL released such rosters for all clubs -- and included the maximum 20 players.
Before you in the Cowbell Crew jump ahead of yourselves by noticing that veteran defenseman Sean Curry and winger Jordan Kremyr are not on the list, note that Aces coach Rob Murray says he expects them back next season, so, no worries.
Winger Alexandre Imbeault is not on the list -- remember, he said near season's end that he intended to retire.
In any event, the breakdown: two goaltenders, seven defensemen and 11 forwards.
Here's the crew:
Goaltenders -- Gerald Coleman, Mark Guggenberger.
Defensemen -- Corey Syvret, William Wrenn, Mike Baran, B.J. Crum, Kane Lafranchise, Dustin Molle, Steve Ward.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska An air taxi crashed and was engulfed in flames at a small Alaska airport, killing all 10 people aboard.
Before firefighters could get to it, the de Havilland DHC3 Otter began burning just after 11 a.m. Sunday at the airport in Soldotna, about 75 miles southwest of Anchorage on the Kenai Peninsula.
Firefighters from Central Emergency Services were the first on the scene, Capt. Lesley Quelland told the Anchorage Daily News ( http://bit.ly/10IzzQN).
"We saw the plume immediately when we left the station," Quelland said Sunday evening.
It was a big, black cloud of smoke visible from the station, about three driving miles from the airport, she said. Firefighters found "the aircraft was crashed off the side of the runway and it was fully involved in flames," Quelland said.
It took crews about 10 minutes to put out the fire. Everyone died inside the plane, she said.
National Transportation Safety Board investigator Clint Johnson confirmed to The Associated Press that the dead included nine passengers and the pilot.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the Otter was operated by Rediske Air, based out of another Kenai Peninsula community, Nikiski.
Will Satathite, who was working Sunday at Rediske Air's Nikiski office, confirmed to the Peninsula Clarion newspaper that the aircraft was flown by Nikiski pilot and company owner Willy Rediske.
A man who didn't identify himself at the Rediske office declined comment later Sunday to the AP, saying the crash was under investigation.
Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Meagan Peters said a fire that consumed the aircraft initially kept firefighters from reaching the Phillies 34 Roy Halladay blue 2010 All Star Jerseys wreckage. The passengers have not been identified.
The Soldotna Police Department said Sunday evening that the Florida Marlins 2 Hanley Ramirez blue 2010 All Star Jerseys remains of all 10 people have been sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Anchorage for autopsies and positive identifications.
Police said in a release through the Alaska State Troopers that weather at the time of the crash was reported to be cloudy with a light wind.
Johnson said initial reports have the plane crashing after departure, but that will have to be confirmed by investigators.
The NTSB is sending an investigative team from Washington that's scheduled to arrive Monday afternoon. Also taking part will be Alaska-based investigator Brice Banning, who was called back from the Asiana crash in San Francisco.
For many Alaskans, flying across the state is common because of the limited road system, exposing residents to a litany of hazards, including treacherous mountain passes and volatile weather. It's possible to drive from Anchorage to Soldotna, but it's about a four-hour trip as the highway hugs Turnagain Arm and then cuts through a mountain passage.
Soldotna was founded in 1947 by World War II veterans who were given 90-day preference for homesteading rights in 1947, according to a state website. The city, now with a population of about 4,300, is on the banks of the Kenai River, and the area is busy this time of the year with people fishing for salmon.
Alaska has already seen a several plane crashes this year, including a June 28 crash that killed a pilot and two passengers on a commercial tour in the Alaska Range.
In another crash Saturday, two men had to swim to shore after their plane went down in the waters off Kodiak Island. The small plane crashed after its engine sputtered out, and the men swam about 50 yards, the Kodiak Daily Mirror reported.
The Soldotna crash also came a day after two teenagers were killed when an Asiana flight crashed at San Francisco's airport.
The municipal airport is located about a mile from Soldotna's commercial business area and is adjacent to the Kenai River, according to the city's website.
The runway is 5,000 feet long and paved.

Yep, Tiger Woods is back. In fact, he's just had one of the better days of a career that's had more shining moments than a decade's worth of NCAA Tournaments. Here's a rundown of Tiger's weekend, by the numbers. And I think we can officially retire that stupid question (Is he back?) once and for all.

8 Tiger's win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational was his eighth in the event, tying Sam Snead's record for the most wins in a single event (Snead won at Greensboro eight times). Snead was 52 when he won 2009 All Star Boston Red Sox 15 Dustin Pedroia Blue Jerseys his eighth Greensboro; Tiger is 37.

1 Woods returns to the No. 1 slot in the Official World Golf Ranking, passing Rory McIlroy and assuming the top spot for the first time since Oct. 30, 2010.

624 This week marks the 624th week of his career that Woods has spent as the No. 1 golfer in the world. That's 12 years. Four-time major winner Ernie Els has spent 19 weeks at No. 1. Phil Mickelson, zero.

6 The win is Woods' sixth in his last 19 stroke-play events.

43 Tiger has gone into Sunday with an outright lead 45 times, and he's won 43 of those tournaments, including this one. If he's had at least a share of the third-round lead, he's now 52-for-56.

+3.89 Tiger led the field at Bay Hill with +3.89 Strokes Gained Putting Per Round. His previous career best for a single tournament was +2.34. If he's putting that well at Augusta, it's over before it starts.

77 Woods has 77 wins at the age of 37 years, two months, 24 days. Sam Snead, whose 82 career wins Woods is chasing, earned his 77th win at the age of 45 years, three months, 10 days.

27 Tiger has now won 27 percent (77 of 284) of his starts on the PGA Tour.

7 Tiger's eight wins at Bay Hill are more than former World American League red blank 2010 All Star Jerseys No. 1 players Lee Westwood and Tom Lehman have for their PGA Tour careers combined (seven). Throw in Colin Montgomerie, who was shut out on the PGA Tour, and it still holds. (h/t Paul Azinger)

2009 Woods has now won back-to-back starts for the first time since 2009聽 (Buick Open, Bridgestone Invitational).

18 Entering The Masters, Woods' major drought now stands at 18 consecutive majors (four which Woods did not enter). That drought is in mortal danger.

The chart doesn't show it, but gold stocks were trading above book value (about 1.1x) when gold bottomed at $255.95 on April 2, Rangers 27 Vladimir Guerrero red 2010 All Star Jerseys 2001, which was the beginning of the bull market.
Here's an even more dramatic fact:

We went back as far as 1997 and could not find one episode where gold producers as a group traded below book value 鈥?and the late '90s was known as the "nuclear winter" for the gold mining industry!
Needless to say, we're in rare territory.

So does this mean we should buy now? To be sure, book values fall when precious metals prices decline, and costs have risen substantially since 2001 as well. So it's possible values could fall further. But in that scenario the relationship between stock prices and book value would remain in rarified territory, making the anomaly even more appealing to a contrarian investor.

While the waterfall decline in gold stocks is painful for those of us already invested, Rays 3 Evan Longoria Home Cool Base White 2010 All Star Jerseys the reality is that this is a setup we get a shot at only a few times in our investing life. It's a cruel irony that those who are fully invested are now faced with the buying opportunity of a lifetime; however, it would be a shame for anyone to miss this blood-in-the-streets opportunity. Our future profits should be higher by an order of magnitude, when the market does turn around.

It's times like these when I remember what Doug Casey told me the first time I interviewed him:

"You don't make money buying when you're optimistic. You have to actually run completely counter to your own emotional psychology."

The extent to which each of us is able to take advantage of the opportunity shaping up is of course dependent upon our personal set of circumstances. For some, this might mean doing nothing; for others, it might mean being bold for the first time in their life. I suspect most readers fall somewhere in between.

Either way, the opportunity is clear: book values for gold producers are at rarely seen levels. Gold stocks may not reverse tomorrow or could get even cheaper when producers start reporting this quarters financial results, but history shows this opportunity will not last forever. It will probably never occur again in this cycle, once gold turns 鈥?and it should be fantastically profitable.

Best and Worst Times to be a Georgia Football Fan Georgia has spent many times in its history in the shadow of other SEC programs: During Vince Dooley鈥檚 early run, Alabama was on top of the SEC. During the last decade, Alabama, Auburn, Florida and LSU have all won SEC titles. But Georgia remains one of college football鈥檚 most storied programs, becoming the first Southern school to win the Heisman and fielding perhaps the greatest running back in college football history four decades later. The Bulldogs have been on the right side of history, but a few times stand out as the best to watch the program Between the Hedges. Here are the best and worst times to root for Georgia.BEST TIMES TO BE A GEORGIA FAN1980-83Record: 43-4-1National championships: 1Coach: Vince DooleyNotable players: Herschel Walker, Terry Hoage, Buck Belue, Scott WoernerGeorgia won the national title in 1980 and three consecutive SEC titles from 鈥?0-鈥?2, but this era can be summed up by one word: Herschel. Herschel Walker is widely considered the SEC鈥檚 2009 All Star New York Yankees 25 Mark Texeiru Blue Jerseys greatest player after rushing for 1,616 yards as a freshman and making a run at the Heisman, an unheard of feat for a freshman at the time. Walker eventually won the award in 1982 as a junior, rushing for 5,259 yards in his career. In the first season without their legend in 1983, Georgia went 10-1-1, defeating an unbeaten Texas team 10-9 in the Cotton Bowl.1941-46Record: 53-11-1National championships: 0Coach: Wally ButtsNotable players: Frank Sinkwich, Charlie TrippiSinkwich gave Georgia a dose of Southern Pride, becoming the first player from a Southern school to win the Heisman in 1942. He鈥檇 remain the only one until LSU鈥檚 Billy Cannon in 1959. Georgia continued to build national credibility by defeating UCLA in the Rose Bowl after the 鈥?2 season in which Trippi earned the game鈥檚 MVP. Alas, Georgia finished third in the AP poll that year behind No. 1 Notre Dame and a No. 2 Army team led by Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis.WORST TIMES TO BE A GEORGIA FAN1993-96Record: 22-22-1Coaches: Ray Goff/Jim DonnanReplacing the legend (and now his athletic director) Vince Dooley proved to be impossible for Ray Goff. Georgia had one losing season in 24 years under Dooley, but two in Goff鈥檚 first five seasons (4-7 in 1990 and 5-6 in 鈥?4). This began a stretch of futility against Florida, as the Bulldogs lost 52-17 in 1995 under Goff and 47-7 in 1996, the first season under Donnan.1953-58Record: 23-38-2Coach: Wally ButtsGeorgia finished ninth or lower in the SEC five times in six seasons. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs were in the midst of a nine-game losing streak to Georgia Tech, an SEC foe at the time. Fran Tarkenton burst on the scene in 1959, but Tarkenton鈥檚 boost of energy was good for just one 10-1 season. Georgia went 6-4 his senior year in 1960 and then endured three consecutive losing seasons.IT WASN鈥橳 SO BAD WHEN...2002-07Record: 74-18National championships: 0Coach: Mark RichtNotable players: David Greene, David Pollack, Thomas Davis, Boss Bailey, Terrence Edwards, Matthew Stafford, A.J. Keeping up with the Joneses may cause Georgia to lose a bit of perspective. Compared to Georgia鈥檚 history, this era is pretty darn good. The Dawgs won the SEC in 2002 and 2005, their first SEC titles since 1982, and finished as high as No. 2 in the country in 2007.

The 52-week range of a is the range of the shares of the company have traded in over the past 12 months. For example, if a stock's lowest share price was $4.99 in the pas 52 weeks, and the highest share price for the previous year is $25.00, the 52-week range Phillies 26 C.Utley blue 2010 All Star Jerseys would be $4.99 to $25.00. The 52-week range consists of a stock鈥檚 52-week low and a 52-week high.

Stock's 52-week Range
The 52-week range could provide investors with important information regarding the stock's price direction and market value. Stocks trading near the 52-week high could indicate solid performance, while stocks trading near their 52-week low could mean that the stock is distressed or undervalued by investors. The 52-week range of a stock, combined with other metrics, can help investors gauge share price performance including:

Forecasting share price direction
Determining buy and sell points
Stock price volatility
A stock with a large differential between its 52-week low and 52-week high indicates that share prices could potentially fluctuate within the 52-week range. Furthermore, stocks trading at their 52-week lows with a large gap from the 52-week highs could indicate a declining trend in share prices. Inversely, a stock trading at new 52-week highs could indicate robust growth in share price. In that sense, the 52-week range may be used to help determine the overall health of a stock.

Trading a Stock's 52-week Range
The health of a stock influences the stock price. Stock prices are dependent on how the companies perform; therefore, an investor can compare the current stock price to the 52-week range and reveal a few outcomes such as:

鈥?Current stock price near or below the 52-week low possibly indicate a poor performing or undervalued company
鈥?Current stock price near or above the 52-week high possibly indicate a company that is outperforming or overvalued

The 52-week range provides data to help form investing strategies trying to uncover possible trends of a stock's potential. Investors should understand that a stock's 52-week range is only part of a stock's make-up and doesn't tell the entire story. When investors compare the current share price to the 52-week high or 52-week low, it provides information that should be examined further. Examining a stock's 52-week low and 52-week high is essential, but the metrics should be used Phillies 6 Ryan Howard Blue 2010 All Star Jerseys with other information about the stock to achieve more comprehensive due diligence.

Swedish drugmaker Orexo AB (ORXOF) reported Friday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Zubsolv (buprenorphine and naloxone), a once-daily sublingual tablet for the maintenance treatment of opioid dependence. Orexo says that the drug, which eases withdrawal symptoms, should be used as part of a complete treatment plan, including counseling and psychosocial support.

Zubsolv will be direct competition to Reckitt Benckiser Group Plc's Suboxone and Subutex. Reckitt dominates the market, but lost patent protection on the two drugs in their original form in 2009. Since, Reckitt has successfully brought to market Suboxone Film, a strip that dissolves under the tongue.

Orexo says that Zubsolv will 2009 All Star New York Yankees 25 Mark Texeiru Blue Jerseys give physicians and patients a new choice with better bioavailability, faster dissolve time, smaller tablet size and a menthol flavor.

Titan Phamaceuticals was hoping to enter the space with Probuphine, a long-lasting version of Suboxome implanted under the skin to treat opioid addition, but the drug failed to gain FDA approval in April. In a complete response letter, the FDA requested additional information from Titan on several points, 2009 All Star Philadephia Phillis 8 Shane Victorino Red Jerseys including the effect of higher doses of Probuphine and training on insertion and removal of the implant.

Opioid dependence has been a hot topic a discussion at the FDA in 2013, encouraging manufacturers to utilize technologies that help deter abuse, amid growing pressures on the agency to limit opioid use. On Tuesday, Acura Pharmaceuticals (ACUR) reported that Pfizer, Inc. (PFE) is expanding its commercialization efforts of Oxectar (oxycodone HCl) tablets that employ Acura's Aversion technology to prevent abuse of the opioid by keeping it from being crushed. Abusers will pulverize painkillers like oxycodone, hydrocodone and codeine for snorting or injecting.

According to Orexo, about five million Americans are affected by opioid dependence, costing the economy about $56 billion annually and resulting in nearly 17,000 deaths each year. For a decade now, opioid-related deaths annually have outpaced the number of deaths resulting from heroin and cocaine overdoses.

"The advanced formulation of Zubsolv was developed using our proprietary technology to meet the needs of patients not satisfied with previously approved buprenorphine/naloxone formulations," said Robert DeLuca, President, Orexo U.S., Inc.

Zubsolv's better bioavailability than Suboxone equates to less drug being required and, thus, lower drug amounts for potential misuse.

Orexo expects to launch the Zubsolv sometime around September and thinks sales can peak around $500 million for the drug.

More than a century of athletic heritage is the focal point behind the recognition of some of the University of Oregon s greatest athletic immortals of all time with the founding of Oregon s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992.

Spearheaded by former director of athletics Bill Byrne, the formation of the Hall was established to permanently honor athletes, coaches and administrators who have been a part of the University s rich athletic heritage over the course of decades. The select few who are elected for induction represent the very best the University of Oregon has to offer and who have brought honor to themselves and teammates.

Each spring the selection committee reviews the candidates, with all nominees eligibility for induction commencing 10 years following their departure from the University.

Plaques honoring each Red Sox 15 Dustin Pedroia 2010 All Star red Jerseys of the inductees and their achievements are permanently displayed as part of the University s Hall of Champions, located on the second floor of the Len Casanova Athletic Center.

The showcase is divided into three distinct areas that pay tribute to great Oregon athletes of the past. The Hall s main corridor features an array of showcases housing many of the trophies and plaques won by Oregon teams and athletes over the years.

The north wing contains depictions of memorable sports moments, traditions and achievements in Oregon lore. It includes timelines Rays 3 Longoria Red 2011 All Star Jerseys that show the development of the University s athletic department as well as the evolution of the equipment and traditions that have made the Oregon experience what it is today.

Reserved for the south wing is Oregon s Hall of Fame, where the greatest sports immortals are enshrined as the very best the University has to offer and who have brought honor to the educational institution as well as their teammates. The athletic showcase is open to the public free of charge weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and four hours prior to the start of every home football game.

Twenty-seven individuals and three teams were included among the Hall of Fame s inaugural class of inductees in 1992.

Anchorage It didn't take long for South to pounce on Service in the high school baseball state championship Saturday.
A nine-run second inning led to a 15-1 victory at Mulcahy Stadium, where Eddie Lewis went 4 for 4 and drove in three runs to help the Wolverines to their second state title in three seasons.
The win was the eighth straight for a South team that barely qualified for the state tournament, but caught fire at the right time and put American League red blank 2010 All Star Jerseys together three solid tournament victories.
"I think we rode the momentum really well," said South starter Brad Butcher, who pitched a complete five-inning game that was shortened by mercy rule. "Confidence is the biggest thing for us, because we had 10 seniors last year and people weren't really used to playing at this level, and I think when they got kind of comfortable with it they Brewers 1 Hart blue 2010 All Star Jerseys started stringing some hits together and people were making the right plays."
South finished with 13 hits to Service's three and no errors to Service's three. Thirteen batters came to the plate for South in the second inning, with Lewis the only player to notch two hits in the inning. Lewis, a senior who won a state singles tennis title for South in 2011, was squaring up the ball and lacing line drives.
"Oh, yeah, 130-mile-an-hour serve, baseball, same thing," Lewis said. "The ball looked huge to me today, so I was happy."
South put up another four runs in the top of the third inning to stretch the lead to 13-0. Service recorded its first hit in the bottom of the third when Ryan Bailey singled. Bailey moved to second when Matt Ilalio was hit by a pitch and later scored on a single from Matt Yandell. The Service offense quickly started to sputter again, however, and a chance for a comeback looked bleak after South added two more runs in the fourth.
"I tip my hat to the pitcher, Brad Butcher," Service coach Ken Wooster said. "We're not gonna win a whole lotta baseball games in this league scoring one run."
Service (10-3) entered the state tournament as the top seed from the Cook Inlet Conference and South (10-3) barely nabbed the second and last available CIC berth. The Wolverines needed a win in its final game of the CIC season to secure a spot at state.
Cold spring weather creates a short high school baseball season that in some ways serves as more of a warm up for the summer's American Legion play. If there is any consolation for the Cougars, it's knowing they get to keep playing baseball.
"The high school part is just the first 10, 15 games of a very long season," Wooster said. "Tomorrow or the next day, they're gonna come back and play well. We would have loved to have come out on top, but there can only be one winner."

Goldpanners 2, Pilots 1
With starter Nathan Bannister in top form, the Fairbanks Goldpanners edged the Anchorage Glacier Pilots 2-1 Friday at Mulcahy Stadium.
Bannister, who improved to 3-0, struck out four and surrendered a run on five hits over seven innings. Kevin Sprague picked up his fourth save, striking out two and not allowing a base runner over the last two innings.
The Goldpanners scored both of their runs in the second inning, getting an RBI-groundout from Alex Rubanowitz followed by an RBI-double by Scott Tomassetti.
The Pilots mounted a threat in the bottom of the seventh when Brody Russell led off the inning with a double, but only managed to score one.

Bucs 9, Miners 1
The Anchorage Bucs notched 10 hits Friday to run away with a 9-1 road win over the Mat-Su Miners at Hermon Brothers Field in Palmer.
David Herd was solid on the mound for the Bucs, striking out four and allowing one run in five innings. He found plenty of run support, with the Bucs putting up three in the second and four in the fourth. Ryan Leonards, Michael Strentz and Lawton Langford finished with two hits apiece and David Andriese drove in two runs for the Bucs.
Mat-Su's Brenden Farney led all batters with three hits, one of which was a single in the third that led to Farney scoring the Miners' only run on a double by Christin Stewart.

Oilers 7, Chinooks 2
A three-run home run from Turner Clouse put an exclamation point on the Peninsula Oilers' 7-2 win over the visiting Chugiak Chinooks at Seymour Memorial Park on Friday.
Clouse's homer came in the bottom of the seventh inning to help cement a win for starting pitcher Billy Strode, who struck out four and allowed two runs in five innings.
The Chinooks scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth to tie the score at 2-2, but the Oilers responded with two in the bottom of the fifth to forge a 4-2 lead.
Drew Turbin finished with a game-high three hits for Chugiak.

With a 5-3 win in the first game, the Pilots swept the Bucs for the third time in 14 Fourth of July doubleheaders. The Bucs have never swept the Pilots on Independence Day.
Brody Russell, Kevin Viers and Jacob Rice all drove in runs for the Pilots in the eighth, Russell and Viers notching singles and Rice grounding into a fielder's choice. Justin Dellinger pitched the final three innings to pick up a win.
Michael Strentz and Cedric Vallieres each drove in runs for the Bucs, who led 2-0 after two innings.

Pittsburgh Steelers 2013 Schedule Analysis Pittsburgh went 8-8 last season and missed Pirates 47 Meek Navy 2010 All Star Jerseys the playoffs for just the second time in head coach Mike Tomlin's six seasons. Will the Steelers bounce back this fall? Here's our look at the Steelers' 2013 schedule.
Pittsburgh Steelers 2013 Schedule:
Week 1: TennesseeWeek 2: at Cincinnati (Mon.)Week 3: ChicagoWeek 4: Minnesota (London)Week 5: BYEWeek 6: at New York JetsWeek 7: BaltimoreWeek 8: at OaklandWeek 9: at New EnglandWeek 10: BuffaloWeek 11: DetroitWeek 12: at ClevelandWeek 13: at Baltimore (Thurs.)Week 14: MiamiWeek 15: CincinnatiWeek 16: at Green BayWeek 17: Cleveland
Order your magazine
Out of the Gate: Pittsburgh has three "home" games in September, but it should be pointed out that one of these will be played at Wembley Stadium in London, England. The Steelers do get the luxury of opening at home against Tennessee, which should allow them the opportunity of ironing out any kinks before the Monday night showdown Cardinals 5 Albert Pujols Road Cool Base Grey 2010 All Star Jerseys in Cincinnati in Week 2. Then it's back home to host Chicago before flying across the pond to play Minnesota in London. When the Steelers go on bye in Week 5 they should do so with no worse than a 2-2 record and even that would have to be considered a mild disappointment.
Toughest Stretch: For the most part, the Steelers' schedule is fairly balanced throughout the season. There is a span of five games starting in late November during which Pittsburgh will play at Cleveland and Baltimore back-to-back, the latter taking place Thanksgiving night, and also will face Cincinnati (home) and Green Bay (away). The game between these pairs isn't without its own intrigue, as Miami's trip to Heinz Field in Week 14 also will serve as a homecoming for former Steeler wideout Mike Wallace. That's three divisional games, two of them coming on the road, a trip to Lambeau Field and an emotionally charged home game crammed into a period of less than 30 days.
Swing Games:TEN (Week 1), at OAK (Week 8)Crossover Divisions:AFC East, NFC NorthBye Week:Week 5Opp. 2012 W/L %:.492 (T-21st)28thEasiest Stretch: Following its Week 5 bye, Pittsburgh will play just two teams that made the playoffs last season over its next six games. Baltimore, the defending Super Bowl champs and hated arch rival is one of the opponents during this span, but this game will be played at Heinz Field. The only other team the Steelers will face that posted a winning record last season is New England, and this trip to Foxborough, Mass., is preceded by a road game in Oakland and followed by a home date with Buffalo. The opener to this six-game stretch is a visit to the Big Apple to play the Jets and it wraps up with the Lions at home. Even with the Ravens and Patriots sprinkled in, Pittsburgh should be able to make the most of its October through mid-November slate.
Circle The Calendar: The Bears' Week 3 visit is special if for no other reason, the history surrounding two of the NFL's oldest and most successful franchises. Crossover play with the NFC North also means a Super Bowl XLV rematch with Green Bay at Lambeau Field in late December, as Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers go head-to-head. Earlier that month, a visit from Miami will serve as a homecoming for new Dolphin wide receiver Mike Wallace. And of course, let's not forget about the Steelers' annual double-header with the Ravens, which is always entertaining, not to mention typically important as it relates to the AFC North division race and overall playoff picture. Looking for something extra to add to to this season's meetings? How about the fact that Baltimore is the defending Super Bowl champions and that the second game will serve as dessert for the NFL's Thanksgiving Day triple-header.
Divisional Notes: Baltimore and Cincinnati, and not Pittsburgh, were playoff teams last season, which adds to the intrigue and competitiveness of this season's battle in the AFC North. The Steelers open divisional play at Cincinnati in Week 2, on "Monday Night Football" naturally, and will host the Ravens in Week 7. Back-to-back road games in Cleveland and Baltimore await Pittsburgh in Weeks 12 and 13, with the tilt with the Ravens taking place on Thanksgiving night. The Bengals and Browns come to Heinz Field in late December, and a road trip to Green Bay sandwiched in between only adds to the degree of difficulty there.
Playoff Push: The Steelers play the Ravens on Thanksgiving night, so technically they play just four games in December. Even with three of the four at home, Pittsburgh will have its work cut off for them during its final month, as Miami and former Steeler wideout Mike Wallace, along with divisional foes Cincinnati and Cleveland will be invading Heinz Field. The Bengals in particular could be battling for a playoff spot and/or positioning when they arrive in Week 15. And as far as that lone road game in December goes, it's just a trip to Green Bay to play the Packers on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field a couple of days before Christmas with, more than likely, playoff implications for both conferences on the line. What's so tough about that?
Buy your
Fantasy Playoff Run (Weeks 14-16): Even with only one road game during the fantasy playoffs, don鈥檛 underestimate the Steelers鈥?opponents. Miami, Cincinnati and Green Bay all finished among the top 18 in terms of fantasy points allowed to QBs, RBs, WRs and TEs last season. The Bengals in particular were pretty tough on QBs (fifth) and WRs (third). Watch out Big Ben and Antonio Brown 鈥?these cats have claws.

Stocks extended their rally into Monday trading with across-the-board gains ahead of the flood of second quarter earnings reports releases that were set to begin with Aluminum manufacturer Alcoa鈥檚 (AA) shortly after the closing bell.

The Standard Poor鈥檚 500 was back within reach of its all-time high, up 0.53 percent to close at 1,640.46 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.59 percent to 15,224.69 points, and the NASDAQ rose 0.16 percent to end the day at 3,484.83 points.

The day鈥檚 only economic data point came in the form of Federal Reserve figures showing that outstanding consumer credit rose to $2.84 trillion in the month of May, up $19.6 billion, a significant increase on the expected $12.5 billion figure and an indication for some analysts that consumers and households have felt confident enough to assume more credit.

Otherwise, the week should become progressively dominated by earnings reports, in conjunction with the release of the minutes from June鈥檚 Federal Open Market Committee meeting and the following press conference from Chairman Ben Bernanke. These events will, of course, be closely watched by investors for indications about when and at what pace the central bank will begin to pull back on $85 billion a month in bond purchases.

After a press Rays 3 Longoria Red 2011 All Star Jerseys conference from June 19 during which Bernanke suggested that tapering could begin as soon as September, markets went haywire for several days before settling into the upward trend of 2009 All Star Milwaukee Brewers 28 Prince Fielder Red Jerseys the past week.

Basic materials stocks had a good day on the S P 500, with Peabody Energy (BTU) leading the way up on an advance of almost 5 percent, followed by CONSOL Energy Inc. (CNX), up just shy of 4 percent, with Phillips 66 (PSX) and Tesoro Corporation (TSO) in tow.

Meanwhile tech stocks had a rough day, with Intel (INTC) and SanDisk Corp. (SNDK) respectively at the bottom of the pile.

Most of the Dow鈥檚 components ended the day in the positive, with Uniteadhealth Group (UNTC) and Wal-Mart (WMT) in the lead, while the NASDAQ saw Dell Inc. (DELL) up over 3 percent on news that Institutional Shareholder Services issues a recommendation to the company鈥檚 shareholders advising them to accept founder and CEO Michael Dell鈥檚 bid to take the company private.

Tokyo Electric Power, or Tepco for short, has spent the last two and a half years trying to contain contaminated water at its ravished Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The plant was pounded in March 2011 when a 9.0 earthquake and tsunami struck the northeast coast of Japan, wiping out the cooling complex and causing a meltdown in three reactors. The earthquake was reported as one of the strongest on modern record, shifting the main island of Japan about 8 feet east, sending waves more than 100 feet high and subsequently killing nearly 19,000 people.

At the time of the accident, the meltdown tipped the scales of the at 7, or major accident, the highest level in the rating system. It was the worst nuclear event since the meltdown at Chernobyl 25 years earlier. The plant has remained closed since 2011 and had been downgraded to a level 1 anomaly until the latest news of the leaking contaminated water. On Wednesday, Japan s nuclear watchdog, the Nuclear Regulation Authority, said it plans to upgrade the situation to a level 3 serious incident due to the magnitude of the leakage.

The reported that sf 49ers jerseys 300 tons (almost 72,000 gallons) of radioactive water is flowing into the Pacific Ocean each day from Fukushima Daiichi. The Japanese government is reportedly going to go ahead with a last ditch attempt baltimore ravens jerseys wholesale to stop the leakage, hatching a plan to sink pipes carrying coolant into the ground to create a 1.4-kilometer ice barrier around reactors to contain the tainted water. The plan is anticipated to cost up to 50 billion yen (approximately $410 million). The process has been successfully used before, mostly in construction and mining applications, but never on such a large scale.

Calling the situation deplorable at a news conference on Wednesday, Japan s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said that the government will make every effort to stop the leaks as quickly as possible. Two weeks ago, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that Tepco couldn t handle the problem and that the government would be intervening. We will direct Tepco to make sure there is a swift and multi-faceted approach, said Abe. Part of that plan includes Tepco digging up the earth that has been contaminated and properly disposing of it.

Tepco has about 1,000 steel Harvin Green Jerseys storage tanks at the nuclear plant that have been holding radioactive water after it has been run through a processing system that removes most, but not all, of the radioactive elements. The tanks are as close as a few hundred feet from the shoreline with the water being used to keep melted radioactive material cool. Leaks have been springing here and there across the past two years, with the latest ones the worst, raising alarm about the situation. The water is reported as highly radioactive, with measurements exceeding 100 milliseiverts per hour. That s double the maximum annual exposure permitted to workers at the plant.

Fearing the larger leak could be a precursor to a disaster, Nuclear Regulation Authority Chairman Shunichi Tanaka warned that the country must remain alert and move quickly to rectify the problem as many of the storage tanks are built with the same design as those that have leaked. We are at a situation where there is no time to waste, said Tanaka at a press conference.

China is shocked that toxic water is still leaking at the nuclear plant, imploring Japan to provide information quickly and completely. The United Nation s International Atomic Energy Association has said that it is ready to provide assistance at Fukushima Daiichi if requested.

is considering a bid for now that 's pursuit of Barcelona's Cesc F谩bregas appears over, with the manager a long-term admirer of the Real Madrid playmaker.
With the 27-year-old having been transferred to Real from Tottenham Hotspur for 拢33m last summer, any initial offer for Modric would have to be in the region of 拢25m for a midfielder who fell down the pecking order under Jos茅 Mourinho, who was his coach until the Portuguese rejoined Chelsea in the close season.
Moyes has made the purchase of a top-class goalscoring midfielder his priority this summer and was hopeful that F谩bregas could become the first major signing of his tenure. But after the former Arsenal captain publicly stated on Thursday that he , Moyes could now firm up his interest in Modric.
Since leaving Tottenham Hotspur for Real last summer the 27-year-old has failed to establish himself at the Bernab茅u and with his four years at White Hart Lane he matches F谩bregas's profile of having proven experience of the Premier League. Although Moyes is an admirer, there is also a view at United that Modric can sometimes lack robustness and there are questions regarding his goal return when at Spurs, where he managed only 13 in 123 league starts for the club.
Although Modric scored at Old Trafford when Real knocked United out of the Champions League last season this was only a second strike in what proved the modest total of three for his campaign, and came after Nani was controversially sent off during the last-16 second leg match.
After having bids of 拢26m and 拢30m rejected by Barcelona for F谩bregras before the 26-year-old ruled out a move to United, Moyes would be expected to offer around 拢25m Gronkowski Black Jerseys in the first instance if the club did decide to bid. With just over three weeks remaining until the closes the manager is conscious that time is starting to press as he attempts to add two midfielders to his squad.
Moyes wants the second of these to be a more defensive-minded player and as he considers making a formal bid for Everton's Marouane Fellaini, the Scot is hoping to assess Sevilla's Geoffrey Kondogbia during Rio Ferdinand's testimonial at Old Trafford on Friday evening, should he feature in Unai Emery's squad.
Kondogbia is a holding player who is interesting a host of Europe's top clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea and Real. The Frenchman, who has represented his country at under-20 level, has a release clause that is thought to stand at around 鈧?0m latest sports jerseys (拢8.5m), and last week Emery told Marca: "We want him to stay here but there are circumstances that could lead to an baltimore ravens uniforms 2013 exit. We will not make any movement to sell. There is no need to sell and we all know that in the club."
Despite impressing for Sevilla last year in his first season there after moving from Lens, at 20 Kondogbia represents potential unlike Fellaini, who played for five years under Moyes at Everton.

Unpredictable. That鈥檚 the way 20-year-old Elliott Rivera best describes Alaska. On a sweltering March afternoon, Cheap Los Angeles Lakers T Shirts on sale the singer and a group of friends are using their skills in chaos and uncertainty鈥攁nd a handful of supplies from the stationery section of a grocery store鈥攖o promote their band to the throngs wandering between stages at this year鈥檚 Extreme Thing music festival.

鈥淐ome see the world鈥檚 largest circle pit,鈥?reads a handmade, handwritten and downright plain placard Rivera holds high above his head as he moves through the crowd. Sure, it鈥檚 ghetto, but for the fast-rising screamo group, it鈥檚 just another symbol of their unpredictable DIY attitude.

Launched in 2010, Alaska comes from Las Vegas鈥?often-overlooked all-ages scene. Their first show took place at now-defunct east-side hangout Area 702 Skatepark and was cheap NBA T shirts mired in confusion with potential for disaster.

鈥淸The band] had just released their first EP, and I was there to see them,鈥?Rivera says. But Alaska鈥檚 regular vocalist never showed up, so Rivera got tapped on the spot.

鈥淭hey said, 鈥楬ey man, do you want to improvise?鈥?I knew the single they had released. So I did the song, and we kind of just started doing shows together.鈥?
Since then, Alaska has slowly begun making a name for itself in town, playing frequent house shows and Yayo Taco sets and writing songs for a debut album, Everything Is Fine, to be self-released on July 9. On July 8, the band will embark on a monstrous 32-date tour that will wind from California to Chicago and back. Though Alaska has played across California in the past, the upcoming route鈥攕upporting an unrecorded upcoming full-length鈥攊s by far its most ambitious.

鈥淚t鈥檚 about making enough gas money to make it to the next city,鈥?Rivera says, chuckling modestly. 鈥淭here鈥檚 nothing set in stone. Anything could happen at any minute or any moment with us.鈥?
Back at Extreme Thing, a crowd clusters near the stage, choosing to see the locals over national acts playing other stages. Without warning, Alaska begins a guitar-heavy assault punctuated by Rivera鈥檚 yells and near-constant stage dives. He sings most songs while crowd-surfing. It鈥檚 a daring declaration that says more about Alaska than any statement or symbol could, handmade or otherwise.

June 19, 1865
The temperatures were climbing toward 90 and it wasn't mid-day yet. He just kept his eyes on his hands. He reached the end of the row and took a moment to stretch his back. He stole a glance at the distant horizon and something caught his eye. First, it was just a flash on the horizon.
Something made him look closer and he noticed a figure starting to take shape. He knew he had best not stand there looking too long, but Massa was being nice. Massa got few visitors and hardly no one came unannounced.
He went back to picking but kept glancing sideways to see the shape grow more distinct. Just as he realized it was a man on horseback, he felt the sting of a riding crop slash across his shoulders. He flinched and turned to see the overseer standing next to him. He warned him to stop daydreaming and get back to work. He kept picking and picking, but still catching glances. Soon it was clear it wasn't just one man, but a whole group of them. They were all riding on horses and one of them was holding a flag.
They got closer still and he saw it was a Union flag.
He bent Red Sox 15 Dustin Pedroia Home Cool Base White 2010 All Star Jerseys back down, but his hands weren't moving. What were Union soldiers doing here? He could tell the overseer was thinking the same thing. He ran off to the house. He and the other men just stood and watched as the soldiers rode up to the front of the house. He heard the bell that called everyone in from the fields.
When they reached they saw the Union soldiers standing on the porch. A man with a lot of gold braid and shiny buttons took out a paper and read some words. When he was done Missus started crying and a buzz went through those gathered in the yard. He was toward the back and didn't hear all that was said. It took a moment but the buzz reached the back.
Free! Did he hear that right? They were free!
The several of the soldiers followed the man with the paper back inside the house with Massa. The rest stayed on the porch. As the reality sunk in some began to whoop and holler and dance. One field worker dropped his sack and took off running towards the main road. He felt a rumble begin in his chest. It grew until he found himself laughing out loud. He laughed until he couldn't breath. Then he stopped and took a deep breath. He breathed in the fresh air of a free man.
- - -
On that day, Union soldiers under the command of Major General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston, Texas, and began to spread the word that the Civil War had ended and that all who had been enslaved were free. It stipulated "an absolute equality of rights," and that from that moment forward, there would be no more slave and master but employer and free laborer. Some left in search of family. Some headed North seeking their more stable idea of freedom. Some went further west in search of opportunity. Some stayed.
There are many theories as to why it took so long for the news to reach.
The holiday Juneteenth grew out of the commemoration of this event and as a chance to gather together with family to reconnect. It has continued through all these generations to become a cultural touchstone. It represents a revelation and a realization. Our freedom became a tangible thing. Our awareness of what that freedom could mean became the foundation on which we built upon to gain the strength we needed to get through Reconstruction, Sam Crowe, the civil rights movement, integration and beyond.
Some of our ancestors seized upon their newfound freedom as a way to strike out in the world. Some, however, stayed mired in the dysfunctional relationship with 2009 All Star Milwaukee Brewers 28 Prince Fielder Red Jerseys their now former masters, choosing what they know over what could be. They knew the law said they were free but they didn't know it.
That is a mentality that some of us perpetuate today. There are those who don't know we are free to be whoever we want to be. We are free to exercise the same rights as any other citizen of this country. We are free to demand that we be respected. We are free to think for ourselves and take responsibility for our own decisions.
Juneteenth reminds us that there will always be those who will seek to deny you your due so that they can have more than they deserve. There will always be those who seek to steal from you or to profit from your efforts.
We are free, however, to protect ourselves and stand up for ourselves and be in charge of our own destiny. What we also need to remember is that we are free. Always have been, always will be. No paper can change that.
