What IS SO exciting... about 'One Brick at a Time'?

The My Arms Wide Open ‘one brick at a time’ project is part of our integrated, collaborative and sustainable community development model, that gets its leverage through the simple act of listening; really listening to the community members and empowering and supporting them to create solutions that come from within to meet the needs they have identified as a community. It really is about seeing what's right with the world around us and seeing opportunities and turning those opportunities into action.

A much bigger vision; we're are not just making bricks.

The ‘One Brick at a Time’ initiative is oriented around establishing a community owned business that employs community members in a brick-making business with a much bigger vision; where they are not just making bricks.

As a result of their own efforts and commitment the community will use and leverage brick-making to facilitate and support the building of local housing, a health clinic, maintaining a reliable water supply, enabling local production of affordable food sources and to finance the start of another community business to make and supply washable, reusable menstrual products so that young girls can stay in school.

What is so exciting about this undertaking?

Well, simply…, it's that the power that comes from within, within people. We're working with the families in the small community of Bergnek, Limpopo, South Africa, who are determined to use the revenue and profits from the 'One Brick at a time' community business as a locally-enabled reinvestment initiative to sustainably develop their community from within. The community takes it's first steps in this endeavour October 2012. We at My Arms Wide Open are truly grateful, and excited! to support and work right alongside them each step of the way.
